A youth was killed in a reported gunfight between the Border Guard Bangladesh and smuggling suspects in Jaintapur border in Sylhet Wednesday morning.
The deceased, Almas Miah, 35, was resident of Nayakhel village at Jaintapur, police officer said.
Border guards said that smugglers shot at them at about 11:00am while they were trying to stop a pickup van, triggering the clash.
They claimed that they also opened fire to resist the smugglers and a smuggler suspect was killed on the spot after being hit by a bullet.
Relatives and neighbours of Almas, however, claimed that he was a farmer and he was never involved in any smuggling.
The border guards shot Almas to death while he was returning home after working in his cropland near Suraighat border, they alleged.Â
Jaintapur police station officer-in-charge ABM Badruzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that local people rushed the victim to Jaintapur upazila health complex after recovering him from the spot but the attending doctor declared him dead on arrival to the hospital.
‘The police sent the body of Almas to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination in the afternoon after completion of a spot-visit report in presence of an executive magistrate,’ he said.
The police officer said that further legal step would be taken after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family.
BGB 19 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Zubair Anwar told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the afternoon that the matter was under investigation.
‘Detailed information will be provided through a press release after the completion of the investigation,’ he added.
