The Police seized a covered van of a private-run courier service loaded with 4,000 kilogram of tea leave smuggled in the country from India on early Tuesday at Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet and arrested the covered van driver.
The arrestee, Masum Miah, 26, is son of late Nayeem Miah of Habrabazar area at Bishwanath upazila in the district, the police said.
Kanaighat police station officer-in-charge Abdul Awal confirmed the incident to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·. He said that acting on a tip-off, a team of the police station led by sub-inspector Nur Hossain stopped a city-bound covered van of Sundarban Courier Service on Sylhet-Jakiganj Road in front the Hafizia madrassah at Satbak area under the Kanaighat upazila at about 2:00am.
The police officer said that 80 bags containing about 4,000kg of smuggled tea leave were recovered from the covered van at that time and the vehicle driver was also arrested for his involvement in the smuggling incident.
‘The market price of the seized tea leave would be about Tk 12 lakh,’ he said, adding that a case was filed with the police station in this regard in the morning.
The OC said that the arrestee was produced before the judicial magistrate court, Sylhet in the afternoon when the court ordered to send him to jail.
