A trainee graphic designer of an online news portal, Dhaka Stream, was found dead at her home in the capital’s Sobhanbagh area Saturday evening.

The deceased, Sornomoye Biswas, 26, joined Dhaka Stream earlier this year.

The police said that her family members broke open the door of her bedroom, found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her room, rescued her in an unconscious state and took her to a private hospital, where doctors declared him ‘brought dead’.

Her death came three months after she, along with several colleagues, lodged a complaint against Altaf Shahnewaz, the Bangla content editor of Dhaka Stream, alleging ‘inappropriate behavior’ at her workplace.

Sher-e Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge Imaul Haque, referring to circumstantial evidence, said that it was a case of suicide and that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection.

Her colleagues and friends said that she attempted to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills on Friday but failed.

Following Sornomoye’s death, many people on social media raised questions about whether the complaint had any link to her death.

The Dhaka Stream, however, in a statement signed by its human resources and administration manager, PM Sajal Ahmed, on Sunday claimed that there was no connection between Sornomoye’s death and the complaint filed against Altaf Shahnewaz.

A complaint, signed by more than 20 male and female employees of Dhaka Stream, was submitted to the human resources department against Altaf Shahnewaz on July 13.

Several employees of Dhaka Stream, who signed in the complaint, also alleged that they were terminated from their posts following the complaint.

The news portal urged a thorough investigation into the matter and said that it would extend full cooperation wherever required.

The statement said that Altaf was withdrawn from the newsroom following the complaint, and an investigation found some of the allegations against Altaf to be true.

Altaf Shahnewaz could not be reached for comments over the phone.
