
Ocean Centres Bangladesh held its third workshop titled Empowering Bangladesh’s Fisheries Sector: Enhancing Skills, Safety and Sustainability for a Resilient Future at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka on Sunday.
The event brought together leading fisheries experts, academics and policymakers to address pivotal challenges and chart a sustainable path forward for one of Bangladesh’s most vital sectors, said a press release.
The workshop, a multi-stakeholder initiative by the UN Global Compact and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, featured expert-led sessions that generated critical and actionable insights.
Syed Ariful Islam, president of the Marine Fishery Academy Ex-Cadet Association, highlighted the pressing health, skill and social safety issues faced by the fishing community.
Sharif Uddin, former director of the Marine Fisheries Office, provided a comprehensive analysis of ocean fishing, detailing its current challenges and outlining clear pathways to enhance both productivity and sustainability.
The session concluded with Mir Mohammad Ali from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, presenting adaptive strategies and sustainable practices to promote climate-resilient aquaculture and fisheries.
The session was moderated by Jakir Hossain, assistant professor and chairman of the faculty of marine fisheries and oceanography.
The event was graced by Professor Md Abdul Latif, vice-chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, as chief guest.
A welcome speech was delivered by Commodore Mohammad Abdur Razzak, country lead for Ocean Centres Bangladesh, who also extended a vote of thanks.
The workshop served as a crucial platform for dialogue, concluding with a shared commitment from all participants to advance a safer, more skilled and environmentally sustainable fisheries sector for Bangladesh.
The knowledge shared and connections forged will directly contribute to informing better policies, improving the welfare and skills of fishers, promoting sustainable resource management and building resilience against climate change.
