Politicians, labour leaders and professionals at a protest rally in Dhaka on Friday called on the interim government to refrain from leasing out managements of Chattogram Port to the foreign companies.

Newly formed Bandar Raksha O Corridor Birodhi Andolan organised the protest rally in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh.


Chaired by politician MA Syeed, former general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh Ruhin Hossain Prince called on the interim government to refrain from leasing out of management of Chattogram Port to the foreign company at the rally.

Ousted Awami League government also tried to lease out management of Chattogram Port to the foreign company but they failed facing movements against the move, mentioned Ruhin Hossain.

He also warned the interim government that if they tried to lease out the port, left parties and labour right bodies would wage tougher movements to compel the government to refrain from the move. 

CPB general secretary Abdullah Kafee Ratan said that the interim government planned to sign a deal with a foreign company in December to lease out management to Chattagram Port. ‘But, people of the country will not accept such a contrary deal.’

‘The port is now profitable and the managements are being performed smoothly so people will not accept such deal,

which will hamper national interests of the country,’ Kafee Ratan said.

Standing committee member of Bangladesh Jasod and former Dhaka University Central Students Union general secretary Mushtuq Husain said that the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus had no legal right to lease out managements of the port to a foreign company.

Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary and also a labour leader Mushrefa Mishu said that the interim government was going to lease out management of the port to a foreign to serve interest of imperialist United States government.

CPB central leader MA Sayeed called on all the left and progressive political parties to be united to wage united movements against the move of the interim government to lease out management of the port.

Khetmajur Samiti president Fazlur Rahman, Udichi Shilpi Goshthi general secretary Amit Ranjan Dey, student leaders Mukta Barai and Goutam Shil, among others, spoke at the protest rally.
