Chief adviser’s special assistant on the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb at an event in Dhaka on Thursday said that the dispossessed assets of the Directorate of Posts would be recovered soon.

He made the remarks at the inaugural ceremony of World Post Day as chief guest at the conference room of the DoP at Agargaon in Dhaka, said a press release.

He mentioned that a list of the DoP’s total assets as well as dispossessed assets had been prepared. ‘The recovery process of the assets will soon begin in coordination with the divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners.’

Mentioning that the current structure of address management is not suitable for the digital economy, Taiyeb said that leveraging the experience of private courier services, efforts were underway to digitise the address management system by integrating area codes, street codes and house codes, along with geo-fencing.

‘The postal and courier law is being updated to ensure personal data security. It is expected to be presented to the cabinet by November,’ he said.

He also added that under the mail and parcel tracking system, only 50 to 60 per cent of items could currently be tracked.

‘Steps have been taken to improve the tracking software, which will enable nearly 100 percent tracking of mail and parcels,’ He said, adding that initiatives had been taken to integrate the DoP with e-commerce to ensure equal service access for urban and rural populations and to restore public confidence in e-commerce.

To mark the World Post Day, a two-day fair was inaugurated on the ground floor of the Postal Building on Thursday. The fair is featuring 20 stalls and an exhibition of very old postage stamps.

Taiyeb also unveiled commemorative postage stamps on the occasion of the day.

With Posts and Telecommunications Division secretary Abdun Naser Khan in the chair, ICT Division secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury and DoP director general SM Shahab Uddin were present at the event.
