Heavy rain on Thursday morning caused sufferings to people due to severe water stagnation and traffic congestion in many areas of the capital Dhaka.

From 6:00am to 12:00pm on the day, 48 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in Dhaka by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.


The department’s meteorologist, AKM Nazmul Haque, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘If 44mm to 88mm of rainfall takes place in 24 hours, it is categorised as very heavy rainfall.’

Due to conjugation of eastern and western wind, the rain took place in Dhaka and its adjacent areas, he said.

Nazmul also said that the rain would continue till today while the amount of rain would also start decreasing from today.

Since Thursday morning heavy rain had started, which became lighter in the afternoon.

Following the heavy rain, water stagnation was seen in several city areas, including Mirpur 10, Technical crossing, Uttara, Abdullahpur, Rajarbagh, Motijheel, Paltan, Green Road, Dhanmondi, Jigatola, Kazipara, Bashundhara, Khilgaon, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Shantinagar and Shahjahanpur.

In the morning, school going students and office goers suffered immensely on roads due to water stagnation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters senior system analyst (technical unit) Md Nurus Samad said that as per the information they got from different points of the capital, traffic congestion was seen in different areas due to water stagnation.

‘Whenever it rains, potholes on the roads are submerged with water and then vehicles run slowly to avoid accidents, which causes traffic congestion,’ he said.

Vehicles were seen moving slowly on roads in Mirpur, Motijheel, Uttara, Rajarbagh and Paltan areas till noon, he added.

DMP joint commissioner for traffic (north) Abu Sufian Ahmed said that till evening traffic congestion was seen at Technical crossing at Mirpur due to water stagnation.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s weather forecast issued at 6:00pm on Thursday to be valid for the next 120 hours or five days, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country.
