Angry people seriously beat five men in Dhaka city on Wednesday, suspecting them as associated with some ‘dope gang’.

The incident happened in the city’s Hatirjheel area at about 2:30pm, the police said.


The injured men were identified as Abdur Rashid, 47, Kalam, 45, Billal, 24, Nur Alam, 46 and Osman, 40, all of whom were rescued by the police and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Hatirjheel police sub-inspector Rajib Hossain said that the incident occurred in front of Rainbow Quarter at Hatirjheel.

‘After receiving information from the control room, we went with our force to the spot and there we saw a mob of students and public beating five to six men,’ he said.

The mob also hurt the police when they tried to intercept, he said.

‘However, the police managed to rescue them and sent them to DMCH,’ he added.

According to the police, the incident began in a bus on Wednesday afternoon, when a bus passenger named Abdul Mannan fell unconscious after unknown people administered some kind of sedative on him.

When other passengers found him unconscious, they became furious and caught the five men and started beating him.

When the bus halted in the ensuing chaos, others also joined the any passengers in beating the suspected men, leaving them seriously injured, according to the local people.
