Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (workers-employees unity council) on Tuesday called for formulation of a democratic labour law, dropping the undemocratic provisions in the current labour law and implementing the proposals of the labour rights bodies.
SKOP, a combine of 18 labour rights bodies, gave the call to the interim government at its press conference held at the National Press Club with veteran labour leader and joint convener Abdul Kader Hawlader in chair.
Abdul Kader Hawlader said that as the interim government was formulating a new labour law, it must ensure that the rights of the workers were fully incorporated in it, while the undemocratic sections of the present labour law were dropped.
He also called for including the proposals given by SKOP in this regard in the new labour law.
Another joint convener of SKOP Ahsan Habib Bulbul read out a written speech at the press conference, calling on the interim government to establish a permanent wage commission for fixing national minimum wage,
Ahsan Habib also called for formulating the new labour law in the light of Sections 87 and 98 of International Labour Organisation Convention.
They also demanded the right to do trade unions without hindrance be realised in mills and factories, including those in the export procession zones.
SKOP also called on the interim government to refrain from leasing out managements of Chattogram Port to foreign companies.
Labour leaders Anwar Hossain, Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam, Mahbub Alam, Razequzzaman Ratan, Safuzzaman Badsha, Shamim Ara, Badal Khan, among others, attended the press conference.
