AT LEAST four people, including a mess owner, were injured in a clash between senior and junior students of Islamic University in Kushtia over a dispute regarding the number of fixed meals in a student mess.
The incident took place at about 11:00 pm on Friday at a mess on PTI Road under sadar upazila in Kushtia.
The injured were identified as Sajib Islam and Hasibuzzaman Nayon, both students of 2021–22 session, Monirul Islam Rohan of 2019–20 session, and a mess owner Tuhin.
According to witnesses, an argument broke out when students disagreed over whether the monthly fixed meal count should be 40 or 45. The dispute quickly turned violent, leading to a scuffle that left several people injured.
Sajib alleged that senior student Rohan verbally abused and then assaulted him, hitting him in the face and head. He was later admitted to Kushtia General Hospital with injuries to his eye and leg.
Nayon claimed that Rohan forced them out of their room before attacking Sajib.
Rohan, however, denied the allegations, saying that the juniors tried to beat him first and later brought 25–30 outsiders to attack him. He alleged that he was also threatened to leave Kushtia.
Mess owner Tuhin said that he was injured while trying to break up the fight. ‘I tried to stop them, but got hurt in the process,’ he said.
A doctor at Kushtia General Hospital said that Sajib sustained multiple injuries, including on his face and eyes. He was advised to undergo CT and X-ray scans and kept under observation.
Both parties have demanded justice and protection from the university administration.
IU proctor Professor M Shahinuzzaman, however, could not be reached over the phone despite repeated attempts for his comment in this regard.
