Bangladesh Army members rescued a group of Jahangirnagar University students Monday night after local shopkeepers in Savar confined them following a dispute over the purchase of goods, university officials said.
One of the students, Mohammad Mahadi, alleged that an employee of a shop assaulted a student, Asad, during an argument over a purchase in the evening.
He said that they, hearing the news, rushed to the spot but did not find the staff and asked another shopkeeper to call him.
‘By then, locals surrounded us and confined us inside the shop’, he said.
The students alleged that the university authorities called the police but they remained inactive as the confrontation escalated.
They said that the students’ group was rescued at about 11:00pm by a platoon of army personnel, the university’s proctorial body and the police.
JU Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said that the shopkeepers tortured a student over goods selling. ‘We are considering legal action after a full investigation.’
Jewel Mia, officer-in-charge of Savar police station, said that the police were mediating a meeting between the shopkeepers and the university administration to resolve the issue.
Shopkeeper Rouful Alam, however, said, A student came to complain about a defective headphone. Since it was already sold, he forced us to replace it and misbehaved with us.’
‘I felt unwell and was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital. Fellow shopkeepers may have confined the students out of anger. I am not aware of it,’ he claimed.
