Traffic became normal on highways through Bhanga in Faridpur on Tuesday after protesters had suspended the blockade of highways and railways, which they held to protest at Jatiya Sangsad constituency boundary changes, till September 20.

The protesters suspended the blockade a day after attacking and vandalising several government offices, including two police stations and the upazila parisahd complex.

A large number of members of the law enforcement agencies were deployed in the area following the violence.

A few protesters continued the pre-announced blockade of the highway and railway on Tuesday for the third consecutive day.

Bhanga Highway police station officer-in-charge Md Rokibuzzaman said that the protesters blocked the highway briefly.

‘They later left the roads and suspended their blockade programme as the Faridpur deputy commissioner, Md Kamrul Hasan Molla, assured them to fulfill their demands,’ he said.

The protesters suspended the movement, saying that they would resume their movement if their demands were not met by September 20.

They said that they would continue their movement to push for a five-point demand, including restoring the two unions of Bhanga upazila to the Faridpur-4 parliamentary constituency.

Meanwhile, Faridpur deputy commissioner Md Kamrul Hasan Molla sent a letter to the Election Commission, requesting it to restore the previous boundaries for Faridpur-4 and Faridpur-2 constituencies.

He urged the residents of Bhanga to remain calm and shun their protest programmes.

Dhaka Range deputy inspector general of police Rezaul Karim Mallick said that he instructed the arrest of the ‘fascists’ involved in Monday’s violence.

Talking to reporters outside Bhanga Police Station complex, which came under attack on Monday, Rezaul also vowed to take action against the perpetrators of the violence.

Rezaul said that four or five policemen were injured during the demonstration and legal action would be taken against those who damaged government property.

However, no cases were filed as of Tuesday evening regarding the violence that destroyed several government offices, Bhanga police station and Bhanga Highway police station.

Bhanga Highway police station OC Rokibuzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that filing separate cases for Monday’s vandalism and arson was in process.

On September 4, the Election Commission published the revised boundaries of the 300 parliamentary constituencies ahead of the 13th national election.

As per the new demarcation, Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila, previously part of the Faridpur-4 constituency, have been transferred to Faridpur-2, which covers Nagarkanda and Salta upazilas.
