The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Friday sent three people to jail in connection with a case filed on the charge of extortion.

The three people allegedly introduced themselves as  student ‘coordinators’ and promised a man to secure him exemption from a case related to the July uprising in 2024.

Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order after Uttara West police station sub-inspector Abdul Malek Khan, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court seeking order to send them to jail.

The three accused are AHM Noman Reza, Tanjil Hossain, and Fariya Akhter Toma.

The defence lawyers submitted a bail petition for them, but the court turned down the plea after the hearing, said sub-inspector Md Atikur Rahman Khan of the prosecution.

According to the case statement, around midnight on Thursday the three people entered a house on Road-6 in Sector-13 of Uttara identifying themselves as ‘coordinators.’

They demanded Tk 10 lakh from one Delwar Hossain, claiming that they could get him released from a case.

Although the family managed to arrange Tk 5.5 lakh immediately, the accused allegedly ordered them to pay the remaining amount by 4pm Friday.

Before leaving, they also issued threats to the family for the money. The victim’s family later filed a case with the Uttara west police station in this regard.

Police arrested Noman Reza the same night in front of Airport police station.

Based on information provided by Noman, police arrested Tanjil and Toma in Jasimuddin area in the capital’s Uttara.
