An additional chief metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Thursday granted bail to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union vice president candidate Jalal Ahmed in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of his roommate at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall of the university.
The order came two days after the DUCSU elections that were held on September 9.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order after hearing his bail petition.
Jalal’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam argued that his client was innocent and was falsely implicated in the case for harassment.
He also submitted that Jalal was set to sit for the Bangladesh Civil Services examination on September 19 and sought bail under any condition.
According to the case statement, Jalal, a student of the Department of Television, Film and Photography, allegedly attacked his roommate Md Rabiul Haque, a political science student, in room number 462 of the hall at about 12:45am on August 27.
Rabiul, who suffered injuries, received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The hall provost, Md Sirajul Islam, later filed a case with Shahbagh police station against Jalal.
He was later arrested in the case and sent to jail on the same day.
Following the incident, the DU authorities expelled Jalal from Mohsin Hall.
