Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Thursday sent controversial health sector contractor Motazzaroul Islam Mithu to jail in a case filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 75 crore.

Acting Judge of the court Md Ibrahim Mia passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission produced him before the court in the case filed by ACC on Wednesday.


During the hearing, the ACC sought a 10-day remand for interrogation.

The court, however, set September 18 on the hearing of the remand petition and sent Mithu to jail.

Deputy Commissioner Md Talebur Rahman of DMP media and public relations division said that Mithu was arrested at 11:10pm on Wednesday night from Gulshan area in the capital and he was handed over to the ACC.

According to a police statement, Mithu was identified as a key figure behind health sector corruption during the previous Awami League government. He was arrested by DMP’s Detective Branch.

ACC deputy director Md Saiduzzaman on Wednesday filed the case against Mithu with the commission’s Integrated District Office in Dhaka–1 on charges of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 75 crore.
