
The river police in the ongoing countrywide operation to protect the fisheries resources and ensure security on the river routes have seized over 2.59 crore metres of illegal fishing nets and arrested 332 people in the past seven days.
According to a press release, they also seized 2,316kg of fish, 590kg of jellied shrimp while 179 bushes were destroyed from the river during the period.
They also arrested 332 against whom 83 cases, including 54 under Fisheries Act, 10 for reckless speeding, three under Balumahal Act, 10 for unintentional death, two under Narcotics Control Act, one for extortion, two for robberies and 10 for recovering unidentified bodies during the operation.
The river police also filed cases against 92 bulkheads and seized nine dredgers for not having valid documents.
The seized illegal nets and jellied shrimps have been destroyed and the fish have been distributed to orphanages.
