The chief election commissioner of JU Central Students’ Union elections, Professor Md Moniruzzaman, on Thursday dismissed allegations that ballot papers and vote-counting machines were procured from a Jamaat-e-Islami-linked institution to favour a particular panel.

Professor Md Moniruzzaman told reporters at Maulana Bhasani Hall that the commission reviewed five firms before recommending suppliers.

‘No work was given to Jamaat or any preferred party,’ he said, adding that defective ballots, if found, would be invalidated.

He also said that the ballot would be counted manually to avoid any conspiracy.

Earlier in the day, Sheikh Sadi Hasan, vice-president candidate from the BNP-backed student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, alleged at a press conference that the procurement was done to ensure the victory of Jamaat’s student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The JCD-backed panel also boycotted the election.
