AT LEAST two people were killed and four others injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Daulatpur in Kushtia early Wednesday.

The incident took place at Bagowan Kandirpala village under Mathurapur union at about 12:30am when supporters of the Mondal group and the Sardar group locked into a confrontation.

The deceased were identified as Sarfan Sardar, 50,  and his nephew Baizid Sardar, 35, residents of the same village.

Quoting local people, Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge Solaiman Sheikh said that there had been a longstanding dispute between the two groups over establishing supremacy in the area.

The supporters of the two groups, as a sequel to the dispute, swooped on each other with locally-made sharp weapons, leaving Sarfan Sardar killed on the spot and five people of the two groups injured.

Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors on duty referred Baizid to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his health condition deteriorated, the police officer said.

Baizid, however, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to morgue for post-mortem examinations.

Police were trying to arrest the accused involved in the incident, the officer-in-charge said, adding that legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of further untoward situation, he said.
