Murder, robbery, and abduction remain high, with only slight improvement in a few crime indicators over 13 months of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.

Police headquarters data show that at least 4,189 people were killed in 13 months between August 2024 and August 2025.

Of them, 2,616 murders occurred in the first eight months of the current year. The incidents of murders were 3,440 in 2024, 3,023 in 2023, and 3,126 in 2022.

The number of incidents of robbery was 768 in the first 13 months of the interim government. The numbers were 490 in 2024, 319 in 2023 and 406 in 2022.

The number of abductions also increased during the current government’s tenure.

A total of 1,650 incidents happened in the 13 months of the interim government. The numbers were 642 in 2024, 463 in 2023 and 460 in 2022.

The number of riots was 118 in the past 13 months. The number was 125 in 2024, 28 in 2023, and 13 in 2022, according to the police headquarters’ data.

The data shows that the incidents of violence against women and children increased during the interim government’s tenure. A total of 21,916 were victims of violence against women and children in the past 13 months. The figures were 17,564 in 2024, 17,941 in 2023 and 21,766 in 2022.

The incidents of theft, however, reduced comparatively, as 8893 incidents of theft occurred in the past 13 months. The number was 8,652 in 2024, 9,475 in 2023, and 9,591 in 2022.

The chief adviser’s press wing in a release on Tuesday said that the data showed the incidents of murders were high, but it is partly due to the fact that at least 1,130 murders committed during Hasina’s 16-year rule were filed after the July uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

Many murder cases were suppressed previously by the then ruling party thugs and the police then discouraged many, the release said and added that the incidents surfaced and were recorded as cases with the police stations after the regime change.

Compared to previous years, it may seem that many types of crimes have increased in 2025, but this is partly because people are now able to file cases more easily, even against politically influential offenders, said the release.

In the past, ruling party members often prevented victims from filing complaints, especially if the perpetrators were their party activists, it said and added that, during the Sheikh Hasina regime, crime figures were deliberately underreported, and the police were reluctant to register cases against ruling party people.

About the high number of robbery incidents, the press wing said that this was because all robbery cases were now being recorded at police stations without interference from influential individuals.

Furthermore, a supportive environment has been established within the police stations, encouraging citizens to report offences without fear or hesitation, it added.

CA’s press wing data also said that offences under The Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act decreased sharply from 1,226 in 2024 to 651 in the first eight months in 2025.

It also said that rioting decreased from 125 in 2024 to 59 in the past eight months.

The police stations across the country recorded 6,354 theft cases in the first eight months of the current year. The number was 8,652 in 2024.

The press wing, in its release, claimed, ‘This suggests that while reported violent crimes (like murder) appear to rise, common crimes are trending downward, pointing to both better law enforcement and more accurate case registration.’

The increase in murders and certain crimes since August 2024 is not purely a surge in violence, it reflects long-suppressed cases finally being filed, it said.

It said that some of the murder cases recorded during the past 13 months even date back to 2009- 2013.

‘Victims can now report without fear of political thuggery. Police officers no longer discourage or prevent people from filing criminal cases,’ it said.

Some categories, particularly theft, are actually decreasing during the period of this government, which may indicate improved law and order alongside freer reporting, the release said.
