
The body of Mawlana Mushtaq Ahmed Gazinagari, a possible candidate of the Jamiat-e Ulama-e Islam for the Sunamganj-3 (Jagannathpur-Shantiganj) constituency in the next year’s parliamentary elections, was recovered from the Surma River on Friday morning three days after he went missing.
The deceased Mustaq, 52, is son of Abdul Mannan of Gazinagar village under Patharia union at Shantiganj upazila in Sunamganj and a central executive member of the Jamiat-e Ulama-e Islam, police and local people said.
Jamiat-e Ulama-e Islam Sunamganj district general secretary Mawlana Tayabur Rahman Chowdhury confirmed to journalists that Mustaq’s body was recovered.
He said that the body was found floating in the Puran Surma River in Sharifpur area under Shantiganj upazila at about 9:30am.
‘He went missing after he had gone out of his Gazinagar house at about 9:00pm on Tuesday (September 2),’ Tayabur said.
Shantiganj police station officer-in-charge Abdul Ahad told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the afternoon that after receiving the information from local people, they recovered the body from the spot and sent it to the Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
‘The reason for the death will be known after receiving the autopsy report. Further legal steps will be taken once the victim’s family submits a written complaint,’ he said.
Immediately after the recovery of the body of Mawlana Mustaq, local leaders and activists of the Jamiat-e Ulama-e Islam brought out a procession at Patharia Bazar at Shantiganj, alleging that Mustaq was murdered.
The party’s central vice-president, Allama Nurul Islam Khan, Mawlana Tayabur and Mawlana Hammad Ahmed Ghazinagari, among others, spoke at the procession.
They gave a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest those involved in the murder of Mushtaq and demanded exemplary punishment of them.
