Leaders of Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati on Friday at a protest rally in Dhaka called on the interim government to formulate a democratic law and ensure trade union rights of the workers at workplace.

The rally was organised in front of the National Press Club, protesting against the death of a worker of a factory in Uttara Export Processing Zone in police firing.

At the rally chaired by its president Taslima Akhter, organisation executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel demanded exemplary punishment of those responsible for the worker’s killing in Nilphamari on September 2.

He said that it was unfortunate that during the interim government’s rule workers were killed in police firing.

Taslima Akhter called on the government to formulate a democratic labour law and implement the proposals of the labour reform commission before next general election.

For workers’ welfare she also raised at the rally a 10-point demand, including formation of a national minimum wage commission, ensuring trade union rights in all mills and factories, giving sufficient compensation to the affected workers, and six months maternity leave for female workers.

General secretary of the organisation Miznaur Rahim Chowdhury, central leaders Anzan Das, Aklima Akhter, Serajul Islam, Shahida Begum, among others, addressed the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession.
