The government has merged the two divisions of the Ministry of Home Affairs again, nearly eight years after they were split in 2017.
According to a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday, the Public Security Division and the Security Services Division have now been merged under one secretary.
The restructured body will again function as the Ministry of Home Affairs following the rules of business.
Earlier, the interim government had decided in November 2024 to merge the two divisions, and Wednesday鈥檚 notification formally implemented that decision.
On January 19, 2017, the home ministry was divided into two divisions when Awami League government was in power.
Two secretaries were given charge of both divisions at the ministry.
A letter sent to the ministry prior to the notification cited the chief adviser鈥檚 decision, stating considering the extensive scope of work, the need for greater coordination, dynamism, and importance, the chief adviser has instructed the reunification of the two divisions in the public interest.
The Public Security Division oversaw the Police Headquarters, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar and Village Defence Party, Bangladesh Coast Guard, the International Crimes Tribunal Investigation Agency, and the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre.
The Security Services Division, on the other hand, was responsible for the Department of Immigration and Passports, Department of Prisons, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, and the Department of Narcotics Control.
