The Students of Jahangirnagar University on Tuesday night seized 28 buses of the private operator Capital Paribahan after a female student was allegedly pushed off a moving vehicle by the driver’s assistant, leaving her injured.
The incident occurred near the university’s main gate on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, where the student, a student of the public administration department, fell while boarding the bus.
She received treatment at the university’s medical centre.
According to the victim and her classmates, she had boarded the bus after tutoring her student in Savar.
The driver’s assistant twice asked her destination, and upon hearing she was going to the university, allegedly shoved her off the vehicle, causing injuries to her leg.
‘I was pushed off the bus and hurt my leg. I want justice for what happened,’ the student said.
Her peers later detained dozens of buses operating on the route, demanding compensation for medical expenses, punishment of the assistant involved, an apology, and a written undertaking from the company that no student would face similar treatment in future.
‘This is an outrageous act. It is unfortunate that someone was pushed from a bus. Similar incidents have occurred before,’ JU proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said.
He added that bus owners were expected to meet university authorities on Wednesday to discuss further action.
