Interim government’s home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday warned that if the Anti-Corruption Commission report about the widespread looting of stones from Sadapathar at Companiganj in Sylhet was found wrong, legal steps would be taken against the ACC officials concerned.
On August 20, the ACC Sylhet office sent an investigation report to its headquarters in Dhaka over the looting of stones from the Sadapathar, reportedly naming 42 individuals, including leaders of different political parties, administrative officials and businesses.
Jahangir said that the investigation committee formed by the Cabinet Division had yet to submit its report on the stone looting.
The committee has sought more time and the mineral resources ministry is looking into the matter, the adviser said.
He said that they were seriously looking into the looting of Sadapathar stones and the report given by the anti-graft agency.
‘If the report is proved true, legal action will be taken against those involved in the stone looting. However, if it is untrue, action will also be taken against the ACC officials concerned,’ the home affairs adviser said.
The adviser made the remarks while talking to journalists after attending a views-exchange meeting with senior government officials in Sylhet division, held at the Sylhet district administration’s conference room at noon.
Responding to a query from journalists, he said that ensuring safety of people and holding elections peacefully were the main priorities of the government.
‘In addition to the army, the navy and the air force will also be used, if necessary, to ensure a fair environment for the elections,’ he said.
Regarding the August 29 attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur, he said that Nur was a national-level leader and the attack on him was very unfortunate.
Including Nur, more than 50 leaders and activists of the political party were injured on the attack when a clash broke out between the activists of the Jatiya Party and the Gono Odhikar Parishad in front of the JP central office at Bijoynagar in the capital.
Among others, deputy commissioners and police superintendents of four districts in the Sylhet division, senior officials of the Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar, prison department, fire service and civil defence, immigration and passport department and drugs control department were present in the views-exchange meeting.
Earlier in the morning, the home affairs adviser visited the BGB Sylhet sector headquarters and police lines in Sylhet. Â
