The police on Monday recovered the throat-slit body of a physician from his private hospital at sadar upazila town in Natore.
The deceased was identified as AHM Amirul Islam, a resident of Bashbaria village under Singra upazila.
Owner and director of Jonoseba Hospital in Natore town, Amirul was associated with the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, a registered physicians’ platform supported by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
According to the police and locals, Amirul regularly attended patients at the hospital from morning until evening. After conducting surgeries, he stayed overnight in his rest room at the hospital on Sunday.
Hospital staff said that they became worried as the door of his rest room was still closed after 10:00am on Monday and broke open the door to find his blood-soaked body lying in bed.
Hospital staff member Al Amin said that Amirul had been with colleagues until about 3:30am and then went to sleep.
‘He was supposed to attend a district BNP programme in the morning. We thought he was resting after staying up late, but when repeated calls went unanswered, we broke the door and found him dead,’ he said.
Natore civil surgeon Muktadir Arefin, after visiting the scene, said that Amirul was found dead in his bed with severe injuries.
Natore superintendent of police Amzad Hossain, who also visited the spot, told reporters that the primary investigation suggested Amirul had been murdered inside his room.
‘We have collected evidence from the scene and are investigating the case with utmost importance,’ he said.
Natore sadar police officer-in-charge Mahbubor Rahman said that preparations were underway for filing of a case in the incident.
