Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter at an exchange of views in Kishoreganj on Sunday said that fisheries in haors were now at risk due to excessive use of pesticides and herbicides in agriculture.
The adviser made the remark at the meeting with the registered fishermen under Itna, Mithamain and Ashtagram in Kishoreganj at the hall room of Mithamain Upazila Parishad, said a press release.
Senior officials of the district administration and the Department of Fisheries, Kishoreganj jointly organised the programme.
Mentioning that a national committee has been formed to limit the use of pesticides in agriculture to protect fisheries and livestock in the haor region, she said, ‘Work is underway on how to reduce pesticides in agriculture and increase production as well as at the same time protect fisheries and livestock.’
Farida Akhter noted that natural changes were taking place in the haor due to various reasons, including the construction of unplanned dams.
‘Instead of silt on the land, the sand is now accumulating, which is destroying the balance of nature at present,’ she said, adding that some dishonest people were using illegal nets and electronic shocks to catch fish.
The adviser said that visiting tourists were doing harm to the environment as most of them do not understand the sufferings of the people of the area.
Noting that the lack of sufficient bridges and culverts in the Itna-Mithamoin-Ashtagram highway is hindering the flow of water, she said, ‘If more bridges and culverts are built, the movement of fish will be easier and everyone will get benefit subsequently.’
She also said that the government wanted only genuine fishermen to get leases and an inter-ministerial coordination was being worked on it.
The fisheries and livestock also released 550kg of fish fries of various species in Itna haor.
