The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate in a statement has said that the law enforcement agency was bound to use force to maintain public security as a clash and chase-counter chase took place between activists of two political parties at Kakrail in Dhaka, creating unrest in the area.
The statement issued on Friday night said that they ignored all tries of peaceful reconciliation by law enforcers. ‘So, the law enforcement agency is bound to use force to maintain public security.’
It also said that five army personnel were injured while helping to restore order.
The incident occurred around 8:00pm, leaving several people injured and the army and the police were deployed to control the situation, an ISPR release said.
Initially, the police tried to manage the situation, but in one stage, the violence increased prompting the law enforcers to seek army’s help as some police members were also attacked when they went to the occurrence of the incident and some of them were injured.
The law enforcement members asked both sides to remain calm, respect the law and resolve their differences peacefully, but some party activists ignored the warnings, organised mob violence and attacked the police.
Around 9:00pm, they held a torch march, threw bricks, and tried to set fire to different establishments as mass people’s movement in nearby areas like Bijaynagar and Nayapaltan was seriously disrupted.
The ISPR stressed that the government of Bangladesh had a zero-tolerance policy against mob violence.
The army reiterates the government’s decision and is ready to act firmly against any mob violence to ensure public safety, peace, and law and order, it added.
