Politicians on Friday at a discussion called on the interim government to hold the next national election in February for democratic transition of the country.

Gonoforum organised the discussion meeting at the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka to mark the 32nd founding anniversary of the party with its acting president Subrata Chowdhury in the chair.

The emeritus president and founder of party jurist Dr Kamal Hossain called on the interim government to take steps to hold the next general elections in February in free, fair and credible manner.

There was no alternative to holding general elections for the democratic transition of the country, Kamal Hossain said.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain said that the road map for holding next national election in next February was announced, but some political parties were trying to delay the polls.

He called on all the democratic political parties to remain united so that no undemocratic political force could foil the election.

The BNP will form the government if voted to power in the election and restore the spirit of Liberation War in 1971, Zahid said.

Former Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim said that the interim government should not delay holding next general polls, saying that they would hold reforms and trials of the fascists.

The interim government has failed to stop mob violence in the country in the past one year so there was no alternative to an elected government to introduce democratic rule, Selim said.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh adviser Khalequzzaman said that the people of the country were eagerly waiting for casting their votes in the election, which right was seized by the Awami League government in past 15 years.

Acting Gonoforum president Subrata Chowdhury said that the country was facing a deep crisis and the interim government had failed to stop widespread corruption in the past one year.

Presidium members of Gonoforum Jaglul Haider Afrique and general secretary Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, among others, spoke at the discussion meeting.
