More than 50 people were injured as a clash broke out between activists of Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad in front of the JP central office at Bijoynagar in Dhaka city on Friday evening.

According to the leaders of both parties, a procession of Gono Odhikar Parishad moved towards the JP central office after holding a rally in front of its central office at Al Razi Complex in the same area in the afternoon.

When the rally reached the JP central office, a violent confrontation began, they said.

The clash initially injured at least 20 Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists, including its general secretary Rashed Khan.

JP secretary general Shammim Haider Patwary, in a press conference held at the party’s central office later in the evening, alleged that Gono Odhikar Parishad activists had attacked and ransacked parts of their office.

He accused the interim government of failing to prevent ‘mob culture’ over the past one year.

On the other hand, Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders alleged that it was the JP activists who had launched an unprovoked attack on their  ‘peaceful procession’ near the Kakrail crossing.

The police and members of Bangladesh Army rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

As the police charge batons on the clashing people to disperse them, 30 more Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists, including its president Nurul Haque Nur, were injured, claimed Abu Hanif, one of the party leaders.

Several of them were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said.
