Two brothers, following their father’s order during a family dispute, have gouged out the eyes of their another brother in front of their father at Muladi in Barisal.
The eyes of Ripon Bepari, 36, were gouged out on August 23 at Bepari Bari at Saheberchar village under Nazirpur union at Muladi upazila.
The brutal incident became known in the area after a video of the incident spread on social media Facebook later.
Ripon’s elder brother Rokon Bepari and younger brother Swapan Bepari were allegedly involved in the brutal act.
The victim, Ripon, is now undergoing treatment at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Barishal district police superintendent Shariful Islam said that two sons of Arshed Bepari gouged out both eyes of his another son Ripon over a family dispute.
‘We have not received any complaint yet in this connection. Action would be taken upon receiving complaint in this regard,’ he added. Â
According to local people, Ripon had been living in Dhaka city for a long time and had collected huge amounts of money and gold ornaments through theft, robbery and fraud.
Ripon claimed that he had kept deposited about Tk 35 lakh and 20 tolas of gold with his brother Rokon.
About three months ago, Ripon sought the money and gold be returned, but Rokon refused. After Rokon’s refusal, several arbitration meetings were held regarding this.
On August 22, an argument broke out between the two brothers after Ripon demanded the money and assets again. Then, their father, Arshed Bepari, angrily beat Ripon and ordered his eyes be gouged out.
Early August 23, Rokon and Swapan gouged out Ripon’s eyes and handed those over to his father.
Upon hearing Ripon’s screams, neighbours rescued him and admitted him initially to Ashu Kathi Hospital and later to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College.
Arshed, Rokon and Swapan have been absconding since the incident.
Ripon’s son Abdur Rahman alleged that his uncles beat his father many times before and finally gouged out his eyes to embezzle his money and gold.
According to police, there are at least 20 cases, including eight theft and robbery cases, filed against the victim Ripon with the Ramna police station in the capital Dhaka.
