Former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque was admitted to the Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka on Monday as he fell ill in jail.

Khairul, 80, who has been in custody since July 24, is facing multiple charges, including alleged manipulation of the caretaker government verdict and involvement in the July mass uprising murder case.

According to Md Jannat-Ul-Farhad, spokesperson for the Department of Prisons, Khairul was taken to the hospital in the morning as his blood pressure was high.

He said that the ex-chief justice was admitted to the hospital at about 6:00 am.

He was taken to the Coronary Care Unit, although doctors reportedly found no serious health issues.

‘He had a cough and was admitted on the advice of the on-duty doctor for observation,’ said Farhad, who is also the assistant inspector general of prisons (development).

‘However, there was no formal approval from the hospital director for admission as the situation didn’t appear critical,’ he added.

Earlier that morning, Ashique-Ul Haque, Khairul’s son and a lawyer, alleged that his father had suffered a stroke and that jail authorities had delayed medical treatment.

Prison officials, however, denied his claim.
