The police have arrested expelled Jahangirnagar University teacher Mahmudur Rahman Jony in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July uprising.

Jony, a former assistant proctor and assistant professor of the public health and informatics department, was detained early Saturday in a raid at a flat in Savar鈥檚 Bank Town.

Savar Model Police officer-in-charge Jewel Miah confirmed.

The officer said that the teacher was shown arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder in cases filed over attacks on the student movement against discrimination.

The OC, however, did not specify which particular case Jony was booked under.

Police said that further investigation into his role in violence during the July uprising was ongoing.

Jony was a student of Jahangirnagar University鈥檚 36th batch and former president of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League JU unit.

Jony was mixed up in a scandal in 2022 when his intimate photographs with a newly appointed lecturer surfaced in November that year.

He was also allegedly heard pressuring a female student to terminate her pregnancy in a leaked audio clip.

Subsequent protests by students and teachers demanded action, leading to his dismissal.

The JU syndicate chaired by then vice-chancellor Professor Nurul Alam permanently dismissed him from the university on February 20, 2024, citing sexual harassment, unethical relations with students, and coercing a female student into abortion.
