Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who was sentenced to life term imprisonment in the case of killing writer and blogger Avijit Roy, was on Friday released from Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail on bail.
He was freed from the prison at about 10:30 am, said Jail Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun.
He said that Farabi’s bail order, issued by the High Court, reached the prison Thursday afternoon.
After verification of the documents, he was released from jail, he said.
Farabi was arrested in 2015 at the capital’s Jatrabari. He was a student of the Department of Physics at Chittagong University in the 2005–2006 session.
The Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in Dhaka on February 16, 2021 sentenced Farabi to life term imprisonment in the Avijit murder case.
The same year, he challenged the verdict in the High Court.
On August 4, 2022, the court accepted his appeal for a hearing. He later sought bail in the case, and on July 30 this year, the High Court granted him bail.
The state later moved to stay the bail order.
On August 10, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division gave a ‘no order’ decision, effectively allowing Farabi’s bail to stand.
Avijit Roy, a US-based Bangladeshi writer and founder of the blog ‘Mukto-Mona’, was murdered near the Dhaka University’s TSC area on February 26, 2015, while returning from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair. His wife, Rafida Ahmed, was critically injured in the attack.
Avijit’s father, Professor Ajay Roy, later filed the murder case with Shahbagh Police Station.
After investigation, a charge sheet against six accused was submitted on February 18, 2019.
On February 16, 2021, the tribunal sentenced five accused to death and Farabi to life imprisonment in the case. Â
