The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday set August 26 to hear a review petition challenging its 2011 verdict that scrapped the non-party caretaker government system.

On August 26, 2024, the apex court allowed five eminent citizens to file the petition.

The petitioners include Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik president M Hafizuddin Khan, secretary Badiul Alam Majumder, local government expert Tofail Ahmed, and citizens Md Jobirul Hoque and Zahrah Rahman.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were later added as interveners opposing the cancellation of the caretaker system.

A six-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, fixed the hearing date on Thursday.

Jamaat鈥檚 lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, urged the court to dismiss the petition quickly. He argued that political parties are unable to submit opinions to the national consensus commission while the review remained pending.

He added that Jamaat had already sought time to submit its views to the commission.
