The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday expelled a union-level leader of Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi for assaulting a government food officer and snatching a journalist鈥檚 mobile phone.
The expelled leader is Shafiqul Islam, the president of the Auchpara union unit of the BNP and the chairman of the Auchpara union parishad.
A press release signed by Rajshahi district BNP convenor Abu Sayed Chad, joint convenor Saiful Islam and member secretary Bishwanath Sarkar said that Shafiqul was expelled from the party for violating the party discipline.
Earlier, Shafiqul, accompanied by 15 to 20 supporters, stormed into the office of Bagmara upazila food controller over the appointment of dealers under the government鈥檚 Vulnerable Group Feeding Programme.
Witnesses said that, considering the situation, the food controller, Nobi Nowjes Amin, sought refuge in a neighbouring office, but was followed, verbally abused, and physically harassed by Shafiqul and his associates.
At one stage, when a journalist attempted to record the incident on his phone, Shafiqul鈥檚 men forcibly snatched his phone.
Following the incident, the food controller lodged a general diary with Bagmara police station, accusing Shafiqul and his supporters of misconduct and intimidation.
Shafiqul, talking to 抖阴精品, admitted that he went to the office with supporters, but denied leading the assault.
Bagmara police officer-in-charge Touhidul Islam said that the GD had been lodged and action would be taken after investigation.
Shafiqul was earlier suspended from his position as chairman over allegations of corruption and nepotism, but was reinstated following a High Court order.
