
A youth was beaten to death on suspicion of mugging on Tongi station road in Gazipur on Monday.
The identity of the 22-year-old youth could not be confirmed as of filing this report at about 8:40pm, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rangpur reported that police on Monday arrested four individuals in connection with the mob killing of two men at Taraganj upazila in Rangpur.
Regarding the Tongi incident, police said that Habibur Rahman and his sister Moni Akter, residents of Kaliganj upazila, caught him with the help of locals on suspicion of mugging their mobile phones.
The crowd later beat the suspect before handing him over to police.
After the youth fell ill, he was taken to Tongi Government Hospital, where doctors referred him to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Tongi East Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Faridiul Islam said the body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy, and efforts were under way to confirm his identity.
Legal proceedings were also under way in this regard, the police official added.
In the Taraganj upazila incident, the arrested were Ebadat Hossain, 27, of Balapur at Sayer union, Aktarul Islam, 45, of Burirhat, Rafiqul Islam, 33, and Mizanur Rahman, 22, of Rahimapur area of Taraganj upazila.
Bharati Rani, wife of one of the victims named Rupalal Das, filed a case with the Taraganj police station on Sunday noon accusing 700 unidentified individuals.
Taraganj police station officer-in-charge MA Faruk said that police arrested them based on digital evidence, video analyses and witness accounts.
He added that efforts were under way to nab the others involved.
According to the case statement, at about 8:30pm on Saturday, Rupalal Das, 40, was returning home on a van from Charan Baluya in Mithapukur upazila with his niece’s husband, Pradeep Lal, 35.
Upon reaching the Bot Tola crossing at Burirhat under Sayer union of the upazila, several local men stopped and questioned them.
The men searched a black bag carried by Pradeep and found a beverage bottle and some medicine. After opening the bottle, a foul smell reportedly caused a few locals to fall ill, sparking outrage among the crowd.
The two men were taken to the field of Burirhat High School, where they were brutally beaten.
They were later rushed to Taraganj Health Complex, where doctors declared Rupalal dead. Pradeep was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday.
