Police on Friday arrested a man for his alleged involvement in the brutal assault of a journalist in Gazipur, where the victim was dragged and hit with a brick in broad daylight on August 6.

The incident took place at about 5:00pm on near the Sadar metro police station and it came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media on August 7.


The victim, Anwar Hossain, a reporter of the daily Bangladesher Alo, is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Sadar metro police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said that a case had been filed following a written complaint by Anwara Begum, the journalist’s mother.

Several persons were named in the complaint, and police arrested one accused, identified as Farid, he said.

Efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, added the police official.

A footage of the incident surfaced on social media on Thursday, triggering widespread outrage among the public.

The footage showed that a group of men severely beating and dragging a youth near the northern side of the rail line in Gazipur city, where a makeshift fruit market has allegedly been set up on illegally occupied railway land.

The attackers were seen repeatedly hitting the man with sticks and kicking him while dragging him along the road in police presence.

At one point, a man was seen picking up a brick and repeatedly smashing it against the youth’s legs and body and one attacker even jumped on the victim’s chest.
