
At least 15 students of Sylhet Engineering College were injured as a group of local people attacked them on Wednesday evening for not leaving a privately run sport centre even after their scheduled time.
The Sylhet police has so far arrested eight people for their suspected involvement in the attack.
Students of the college, which is located on Alurtol Road in Sylhet, said that they arranged a football match on Wednesday afternoon by renting the sport centre in Baluchar area in the city.
They said that they arranged the match to celebrate the first anniversary of the July uprising that toppled the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
鈥楢 group of some 30 people suddenly entered the sport centre at about 7:00pm chanting slogan 鈥淛oy Bangla鈥 and tried to force us out of the centre. When we demanded the reason for their action, they attacked us,鈥 Mahi, a Sylhet Engineering College student, alleged.
He claimed that the local youths led by Zaigirder Mohammad Mamun, an activist of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, launched the attack, leaving more than 15 students of the college injured.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mohammed Saiful Islam confirmed the incident to 抖阴精品.
He said that the Sylhet Engineering College students rented the sport ground for only one hour but they continued with their football match even one and a half hours beyond their allotted time.

Shah Paran police station officer-in-charge Monir Hossain Molla told 抖阴精品 that Sylhet Engineering College fourth year student Tanvir Ahmed Fahim filed a case with the police station against 30 people, including 14 named accused, in this regard early Thursday.
