Dhaka University professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury at a programme on Thursday said that in order to achieve the overall development of the society and the state, social ownership must be established, not individual ownership.

He made the remark at the oath-taking and orientation ceremony for the new students of the July-2025 session of Gono Bishwabidyalay at Savar in Dhaka, said a press release.

In his speech as chief guest, he also said that the people in the country should have equal rights and opportunities, and the real ownership of the state should be the people.

Commenting on the fact that Bangladesh could not be freed from colonialism, the professor said, ‘Bangladesh is so poor because the rich people of the country, starting from the British, are constantly looting the resources of the workers and siphoning abroad.’

A member of the board of trustees of the university, Serajul Islam Choudhury said that there was a lot of misinformation in the current education system that encouraged a student to improve himself, not for the development of society. ‘But by changing this mentality, one must acquire knowledge not only for one’s own emancipation but also for the society and the country.’

He also said that the late freedom fighter Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury established the Gono Bishwabidyalay with the spirit of the Liberation War and the aim of establishing social ownership.

Presided over by vice-chancellor of the university Professor Md Abul Hossain, The orientation ceremony was organised at the PHA auditorium of Gonashasthaya Kendra.

Treasurer of the university, deans and registrars of various faculties and others, among others, spoke at the ceremony.

Earlier in the morning, at the foot of the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, the new students paid tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement, the War of Independence, and all the struggles for establishing democratic and social justice and recited the oath.
