Police Headquarters in a release on Wednesday said that the police submitted charge sheets in 19 cases, including eight murder cases so far, filed over the incidents of July Uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 authoritarian regime.
Among the eight murder cases, three were filed in Sherpur, one in Kurigram, one in Feni, one in Cumilla, one in Chandpur and one in Chattogram.
Of the other cases, one each were filed in Dhaka and Barishal metropolitan areas, three in Chapainawabganj, two in Sirajganj, one in Jamalpur and one in Pabna. Two were investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation.
Investigations into the violence and killings, however, are widely criticised as slow and scattered.
According to the Police Headquarters, 1,730 cases were filed over the atrocities, including 749 murder cases, with 42 police units in districts and metropolitan cities.
The PHQ said that high officials were supervising the cases over crimes during the July uprising to ensure fair investigation.
According to a government gazette, 836 people were killed during the mass uprising as government on Sunday removed names of eight martyrs.
The ousted prime minister and AL president, Sheikh Hasina, herself ordered security forces to kill protesters and hide their bodies to quell the student-led protests in July 2024 in Bangladesh, according to a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released on February 12.
Based on deaths reported by various credible sources, the report estimated that as many as 1,400 people might have been killed between July 1 and August 15 in 2024, and thousands were injured, the vast majority of whom were shot by Bangladesh鈥檚 security forces, said the report.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India for shelter on August 5, 2024 and Professor Muhamamd Yunus-led interim government took over on August 8.
