Different political parties, government institutions and socio-cultural organisations on Tuesday observed July Mass Uprising Day across the country.

At an event marking the day, July uprising injured, fighters and martyrs’ families urged the interim government to ensure their legal protection and justice, saying that they feared difficulties in future after the change of the government.


The political parties and other organisations demanded upholding the spirit of the July mass uprising that ousted the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, and justice for the July victims.

Marking the day, the Dhaka district administration organised a reception programme at the China Bangladesh Friendship Convention Centre in the capital Dhaka.

At the reception, July uprising injured, fighters and martyrs’ families said that the interim government, which assumed office on August 8, 2024, was yet to give the July victims any legal coverage though the government was formed on their victory.

Addressing the event, the chief adviser to the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a video message reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice.

‘We are here to take an oath that we will never bow our heads to any form of oppression, and we will strive to establish an accountable, humane, democratic and non-discriminatory state,’ he said.

Nesar Uddin Nayeem, 38, an injured victim said that they would not allow to hold any election before the government could ensure justice for the July victims.

Advisers to the interim government Farida Akter, Sharmeen S Murshid and Touhid Hossain, among others, were present at the event.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Chattogram reported that July Mass Uprising Day was observed with a series of commemorative events organised by political parties, civic groups and government institutions.

The Chattogram district administration hosted a reception and discussion event at the Circuit House, honouring the families of those who were killed or injured during the uprising.

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh’s Chattogram Metropolitan unit and Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, also marked the day with different programmes in the port city.

In Rajshahi, teachers, students and officials of Rajshahi University brought out a ‘victory procession’ in front of the university administration building and joined a short rally at the Talaimari crossing in the city, reports ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi.

The Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology also observed July Mass Uprising Day with various programmes.

The Thakurgaon district administration organised a special gathering honouring the frontline fighters of the July uprising at the district’s Shilpakala Academy.

The Manikganj district administration placed floral wreaths and offered prayers at the grave of martyred Rafiqul Islam at Rupsha village under Shibalaya upazila.

Local authorities in Khulna, Cumilla, Bagerhat, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur also held events marking July Mass Uprising Day.

Left Democratic Alliance, a combine of six political parties, organised a rally in front of the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka where the alliance’s coordinator Ruhin Hossain Prince, also general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, said that the goal of July uprising would not be fulfilled if the spirit of the uprising was not implemented.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Bazlur Rashd Firoz, SPB (Marxist) coordinator Masud Rana and Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu, among others, spoke at the rally.

Jaiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD also held a rally at the same place. Jatiya Mukti Council held a rally in front of the Purana Paltan crossing.

The CPB and the SPB also held separate rallies at Purana Paltan crossing and in front of the National Press Club to press their demands for implementing July uprising spirit.
