
The Liberation War Affairs Ministry has cancelled the recognition of eight individuals listed as ‘July martyrs’ in a gazette.
The ministry issued a notification removing their names from the gazette list on Sunday night as per the ‘July Uprising Martyrs and Fighters Welfare and Rehabilitation Ordinance, 2025’ and ‘Rules of Business 1996’.
After the latest changes, the total number of July martyrs announced through the gazette now stands at 836.
The notification did not specify the reason for the removal of their names.
Ministry of Liberation War Affairs secretary Ishrat Chowdhury told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Monday that the eight individuals were not involved in the July mass uprising and had died for other reasons.
The secretary said, ‘We are currently verifying complaints regarding some of the martyrs. If we find, after verification, that any of them were not involved in the uprising, we will remove their names as well.’
The individuals whose names were removed are: Md Khalilur Rahman Talukdar of Tangail (Gazette Number 229), Musleh Uddin of Dhaka’s Rampura, (Gazette No 224), Jinnah Mia of Narsingdi (Gazette No 375), Shah Jahan of Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar (Gazette Number 611), Md Roni of Savar (Gazette Number 766), Tawhidul Alam Jisan of Narayanganj (gazette no. 818), Bashir Sardar of Patuakhali (Gazette Number 823), and Bandhan of Shariatpur (Gazette Number 836).
Earlier, the government published the gazette of 844 July martyrs in two phases.
The government provides a one-time financial assistance of Tk 30 lakh and a monthly allowance of Tk 20,000 to the families of the July martyrs.
