
Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, was elected as a council member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, one of the world’s most esteemed higher education networks, recently.
Professor Obaidul Islam, a distinguished physicist and former long-time faculty member at the University of Dhaka, will represent Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka on the ACU Council from 1 August 2025 to 31 August 2028, said a press release on Monday.
Among five newly elected council members from the UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, Namibia, and Bangladesh, Obaidul Islam was the sole representative from Bangladesh.
Founded in 1913, the ACU is the oldest international organisation fostering collaboration and excellence among universities across Commonwealth nations, with over 400 member institutions.
