In a major stride for Bangladesh’s energy security, JERA Meghnaghat Power Limited officially launched commercial operations at one of the country’s largest and most efficient gas-fired power plants in Meghnaghat of Narayanganj on July 28.

The 745-megawatt combined-cycle gas turbine plant, with a net output of 718MW, is expected to meet 5 per cent of Bangladesh’s peak electricity demand, according to a press release issued on Sunday.

The electricity generated will be supplied to the national grid under a 22-year power purchase agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development Board.

‘As Bangladesh aims to become a developed nation by 2041, its electricity demand is projected to surge to 51,000MW. The new plant will play a crucial role in ensuring reliable, efficient, and sustainable power supply to support industrial growth and economic development’, read the release.

Yasunori Katsumata, CEO of JMPL, said that they were empowering industries and creating jobs while supporting Bangladesh’s long-term energy transition.

The project was financed by a consortium of banks, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Asian Development Bank.
