A Dhaka court on Saturday placed two more accused on a four-day remand in connection with the killing of Md Sohag, locally known as Lal Chand, near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in the capital Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter’s court issued the remand order after the investigating officer of the case and Kotwali police station inspector Nasir Uddin produced the accused before the court with a 10-day remand plea.
The accused are Md Ruman Bepari, 32, and Md Abir Hossain, 28.
They were arrested at about 2:30am on Saturday during an operation in Keraniganj area, Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for media and public relations Mohammad Talebur Rahman said in a press briefing on Saturday.
‘Ruman and Abir were arrested after analysing the statements of the earlier arrested accused and CCTV footage from the scene,’ he said, adding that with the new arrests, a total of 14 accused had been arrested in the case so far.
Nine of the accused gave confessional statements before the court, Talebur said.
On July 9, a group of people dragged Sohag from his shop Sohana Metal on Rajani Ghosh
Lane and took him inside the Mitford Hospital and hit and hacked him to death with concrete boulders inside Gate 3 of Mitford Hospital, according to the police and local people.
On July 10, Sohag’s elder sister, Monjuara Begum, filed a murder case with the Kotwali police, accusing 19 named people and 15 to 20 unnamed others for Sohag’s murder and police filed a separate case under the Arms Act in this connection.
In the wake of the killing, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its affiliated organisations Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra
Dal expelled five of their members for their alleged involvement in the incident.
Five expelled members are among the named accused in the case and police have so far arrested one of them, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin.
