
The police have arrested three Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and two others in connection with extortion threats issued to a fish trader in Tangail.
Ward Number 8 BNP president Golam Rabbani, general secretary Shah Alam Mia, and Ward Number 7 BNP general secretary Zubair Hossain, along with Abdullah Al Mamun, and Sabbir Mia were arrested from Santosh of Tangail municipality between Friday night and Saturday morning.
They allegedly sent the trader a letter demanding Tk 5 lakh extortion, saying that they were members of a killer gang.Â
Tangail Sadar police officer-in-charge Tanvir Ahmed on Saturday said that they were arrested with the help of the Detective Branch of the police.
Tangail city BNP general secretary Ijazul Haque Sabuj alleged that it was a conspiracy to frame BNP leaders and activists. Â
On Thursday night, an unknown person handed a letter to an employee of fish trader Azaharul Islam in Santosh area.
The letter went viral on the social media on Friday morning.
The letter read, ‘You have been in the fish trade for a long time. You have no competitors in this trade. Tk 5 lakh is nothing to you. Therefore, on Sunday at 7:00pm…under a tree in front of Kagmari Mahmudul Hasan’s house in a shopping bag…’
The letter also threatened to murder the fish trader if he shared the matter with anyone or went to the law enforcers.
