The 37th anniversary of death of former president Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury will be observed today.

To mark the day, a prayer session will be held at Dabail Jamia Ashrafia Madrassah in Tangail, said a press release.

Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, also a former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, resigned as the VC of the university on March 15, 1971, protesting at the killing of two students on the DU campus by the Pakistani army.

He also played a leading role in mobilising world opinion in favour of Bangladesh during the War of Independence.

In September 1971, he led a 16-member Bangladesh delegation at the United Nations general assembly. At that time, he was also head of Bangladesh missions in London and New York. After the war, he returned to Dhaka and was made president of Bangladesh in January 1972.

He was also elected president in April 1973, and in December he resigned to become special envoy for external relations with the rank of a minister.

Abu Sayed was also elected chairman of UN Human Rights Commission unanimously in 1985.

He also wrote many books, including ‘Prabase Muktijuddher Dinguli’, ‘Manabadhikar’, ‘Muslim Family Law in the English Courts’, ‘Human Rights in the Twentieth Century’ and ‘Swadhinatar Pratishruti O Anyanya’.
