Border Guard Bangladesh on Saturday evening detained six more people, including a woman, on charges of illegally entering the country from India through the border at Tahirpur upazila in Sunamganj. 

The detainees are Pravat Talukder, 74, of sadar upazila in Sunaganj, Ripan Sarker, 35, and Apu Sarker, 17, of Madyanagar upazila in the same district, and, Bidhan Sarker, 50, of Kamlakanda upazila in Netrakona, Rikta Sarker, 45, and Srijan Sarker, 16, of Mohanganj upazila in Netrakona, said the police.


Earlier on Saturday morning, the BGB detained another 11 people on charges of illegally entering the country from India through a border point at Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar.

BGB-28 Battalion (Sunamganj) commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel AKM Zakaria Kadir confirmed the detention of the six people in the latest incident.

He told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the BGB personnel of Birendranagar outpost at Tahirpur upazila detained the six people on Saturday evening immediately after they entered Bangladesh territory from India through Lamaghata border point under Uttar Shripur union of Tahirpur.

Quoting the detainees, Lieutenant Colonel Zakaria told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they confessed to the BGB personnel that they had entered India through different border points around five months ago for jobs and had been working at Cooch Behar district in West Bengal State of the India.

‘In the wake of the recent drive to evict illegal immigrants from India as well as for not getting proper wages from the Indian employers, they decided to return to Bangladesh,’ the BGB officer quoted the detainees as saying.

He said that the detainees were handed over to the Tahirpur police at the night.

Tahirpur police officer-in-charge Md Delwar Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the detainees were sent to the Sunamganj chief judicial magistrate court about Sunday noon after they were shown arrested in a case filed on charges of entering the country illegally.

Sunamganj court police inspector Mohammad Akbar Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· at around 4:00pm on Sunday that relatives of three arrestees submitted bail petitions to the court.

‘The court, however, has yet to hear the petitions,’ he added.
