A 40-year-old man was hacked to death by a group of miscreants on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Gouripur bus stand under Daudkandi upazila in Cumilla Friday night.

The deceased, Md Al Mamun of Sholakandi village under Titas upazila in the district, is an accused in 23 cases, the police said.

Daudkandi police station officer-in-charge Junayet Chowdhury said that a group of three or four miscreants hacked Mamun with sharp weapons at the Gouripur bus stand area at about 11:30pm on Friday and left the place, leaving the victim in a pool of blood.

Being informed, the police rushed to the spot and found the youth dead,’ OC Junayet said.

The police and locals said that Mamun used to control drug dealing and extortion in the Gouripur area, which might have led to the murder.

On February 24 this year, the joint forces detained Mamun with 180 pieces of Yaba tablets and 30 litres of liquor at the Gouripur intersection. He was sent to jail the following day.

He was later freed from jail on bail.
