A platform titled University Teachers Link was launched on Saturday, aiming to uphold the dignity of teachers at the country’s public and private universities and advance the spirit of the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The platform was launched at a programme at the TSC cafeteria of Dhaka University. The platform’s guiding theme is ‘Knowledge, Trust, Dignity and Freedom’, organisers said.
Speakers at the event said that the UTL seeks to break away from the prevailing culture of political allegiance and aims to promote education, research, self-respect, freedom of thought, and a sense of national responsibility.
A central convening committee, comprising teachers from both public and private universities, was announced in the programme.
Professor Md Ataur Rahman Biswas, the chairman of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at Dhaka University, was made the convener of the platform, while Professor Mohammad Bilal Hossain of Jagannath University’s History Department was made its member secretary.
In a written statement, Dr Bilal Hossain said that the mass uprising of July 2024 had awakened a revolutionary aspiration that was now reshaping the political and ideological outlook of the people.
Calling upon the teachers across the country, the organisers said that the UTL was not only a platform but also a movement.
The organisation outlined its mission to form an inclusive teachers’ body comprising educators from both public and private universities to safeguard and promote the academic and professional interests of teachers, to actively participate in shaping national education and policy, among others.
